Personal Information
James Norrington is the Commodore of the British Royal Navy in the Caribbean in the year 1712. This must be known first and foremost before all other things about the man, as it is this fact that he places primary in his own life. To that end, he is a fierce soldier and a hunter of pirates, known to many a brigand as 'Commodore Death' or 'The Scourge of Piracy.' He does his job well and with honour, always upholding the law and never going beyond; he is not a cruel man, but a just one, and will not cause a man undue pain or suffering, even if he is a pirate.
Until recently, he was betrothed to Elizabeth Swann, the daughter of the Royal Governor. She, however, was in love with another man, and James let her go, knowing that he could not keep such a woman against her will. He is, however, still nursing the pain from that rejection.
Another thing which must be noted about James is that he has a rather unhealthy obsession with one Jack Sparrow. The notorious pirate has managed to escape from under his nose several times (something no other pirate can claim), all the while flouting James' Commodorial definitions of what exactly a pirate ought to be. This is most unnerving to him, especially as Sparrow seems to take obscene delight in taunting him. The bastard.
James is highly intelligent and well-read, and is extremely proficient in the use of the English language, knowing- for example- how to insult a man without ever actually saying anything insulting. This is a skill which comes in extremely handy when he is forced to attend Governor's balls or dinners with merchant captains, etc. He also has a passing skill at the pianoforte, though this is not something he often gets a chance to indulge, and is more of a pasttime than anything else.
It is rumoured that he can kill a man with the sheer force of an eyebrow-raise and an 'Indeed.'
